13 May REVIEW: Penguins vs Hawkes is a good battle!

Rain - lots and lots of rain - led to a late change of venue for your Mighty Penguins(c), but your heroes showed up at Norana Park, Favona ready to play!

But first, we love to honor the Penguins that put the game ahead of themselves and put their hand up to make sure both teams get to play this great game of rugby.  So thank you Drew and Hugo for not only taking one for the team and helping out the Hawkes, but for making sure you did your best and made your team mates work as hard as possible to play the game!  You guys rock.

The Papatoetoe Hawkes bought a lot of energy to their play, and in the first half they managed to shut down our Penguins ball runners.  The first 10 minutes of the games, our Penguins were struggling to get their hands on the ball and spent a lot of time defending hard up against their own line.  But Penguins are made of stern stuff and the boys held out wave after wave of attack making sure the damage to the score board was kept under control.

If there are two things we love in our Penguins heroes, it's making tackles and cleaning out rucks.  Leading the way this week with their tackling were Mason, Maddox and Jack, who knocked over player after player.  And putting in hard yards at rucks and cleaning out Hawkes was J-Dub and Alex.  A special mention to Riley who went from being in a leg cast earlier in the week, to not only running out for the game, but for making the cleanout play of the day having spotted a rogue Hawke lurking on the Penguins side of the ruck.  Nice work fella!

In the second half, the Penguins turned up the heat on their worthy opponents.  Leading the charge (literally!) were Jake, Michael and Noah N who are starting to put in to play their training and moving forward both with ball in hand and in defense - especially at restarts and lineouts.  And on the occasion that a Hawke managed to break through the Penguins defensive wall, we had Noah P and Joey showing their wheels and chasing them down to keep them honest.  Great stuff fellas!
